Meritxell Pallejà is a family winery that practices biodynamic agriculture and bears the name of its oenologist founder. It is located in Gratallops within the DOQ Priorat region.

Meritxell’s first wine, Nita (in homage to her grandmother), was launched on the market in 2004. She recovered the family’s old vineyards in order to make her new wines. In 2015, she founded the winery after 18 years of experience in the world of wine.

Meritxell Pallejà belongs to a new generation in the Priorat that has decided to revive family traditions and to introduce rare techniques such as biodynamic agriculture. This type of agriculture takes the energy of the stars into account, and is guided by the lunar calendar in all production processes, from the harvest and vinification to bottling and even choosing the ideal moment to consume the wine. The stars help the winemaker determine levels of activity in the wine, or the ways in which the vitality of the vines may be affected, all of which translate into future changes in the aromas, flavors and properties of the wines.

The winery has five hectares of planted vineyards, distributed among five estates and with a production rate of 32,000 bottles per year. The land on which the estates are located is characterized by rocky soil made up of llicorella slate, which retains very little water, a rugged landscape, and a climate of extremes with very high temperatures during the day and very low temperatures at night. The yields of the vineyards are therefore very low, but the resulting product is a complex and expressive wine, with a unique personality. The excellent quality and high concentration of fruit in the wines are thanks to the resistance the plants develop in order to survive their harsh conditions.

At Meritxell Pallejà, the land is worked in lunar cycles, following ancient methods used by the family’s ancestors. For example, pruning is carried out when the Moon is waning and in descent. Harvesting also takes place in this lunar stage in order to improve the ageing of the wine. Key phases of the winemaking process are carried out when the Moon is waxing and ascendant, and the wines are bottled when the moon is waning.

As for the grapes, only varieties native to the Priorat – garnatxa and cariñena – are cultivated. The fruit is handpicked and only mature and healthy vines are selected. Vinification is carried out separately on each estate, and each unique wine is labeled with the name of the estate its grapes came from.

Visit the winery and savor the wines of Meritxell Pallejà. Discover the unique and singular taste of biodynamic wines created using traditional methods and guided by the movements of the Moon and stars.
