A day of wine tourism visiting Celler de Capçanes in the DO Montsant region will allow you to discover the secrets of Kosher Wines.

This is a cooperative that was founded in 1933, when some of the local families came together with the idea of offering wine in bulk at competitive prices. It was not until 1991 that the Capçanes cooperative began to vinify and produce its own bottled wines. In 1995 at a wine fair in Paris, a Jewish importer tasted the wines of the cooperative and, surprised by their high quality, decided to establish a partnership to produce kosher wines in Celler de Capçanes, thus making it a pioneer winery and one of the first to produce wines for the Jewish community.

As a result of this new relationship, the winery had to make important changes to its facilities and winemaking processes. Producing kosher wines meant incorporating strict production standards and, among other things, an extension of the facilities, a rabbi who supervised the whole process, and a whole series of rules and precepts for the wine to be suitable, which in fact is what kosher means: a wine that is suited for consumption by the Jewish community. During your visit you will learn all about this type of wine – how it is made, the room where the barrels rest and where only the rabbi can enter, etc.

Celler de Capçanes has 250 hectares of planted vineyards and produces 1,000,000 bottles each year with the participation of 50 partners, making the winery one of the largest in the province of Tarragona in terms of production.

During the visit you will discover the vat room, the winemaking room, the ageing area and the Cabrida room, where the best wines rest. Afterwards, you will head to the tasting room, specially equipped to taste the wines in comfort, and with magnificent views of the impressive barrels in the winery.

We offer a number of different wine tasting possibilities. The basic tasting, for those who do not have much time. Consists of tasting three wines over the course of half an hour. You can also choose a garnacha tasting, where you will sample four different terroirs, discovering the particularities offered by each. For those who want to do a Kosher tasting, and includes a kosher rosé wine and the Peraj Ha’abib, which is the wine that changed the history of the winery.

If you have a little more time, you can do the complete tour, which includes the above options and a visit to the winery and lasts an hour and a half. You can also visit the vineyards. This visit takes about two hours and includes a tour of the vineyards and the winer, as well as the tasting.

If you are interested in something more intensive, we can offer introduction to wine tasting sessions where you will learn about the process of vinification in much more depth.

Finally, we recommend a couple of other activities in the area. The first is a hiking trail called the Ruta de la Pedra Seca de Capçanes, a route of about 2 hours (round trip) among fantastic low walls, huts, corrals, and different types of shelters, all made from local dry stone.

Another possibility is to visit the cave paintings of Capçanes, made up of approximately twenty groups of paintings that range between 3,000 and 10,000 years old.
