The Ametller family’s wine business began in 1824, when they bought a small estate in Sant Martí Sarroca, in the Penedès region. Seven generations later, the family returned to its origins and, seeing the potential of the Priorat, bought their first lands in Porrera.
Celler Joan Ametller was founded in 2003 within the municipality of La Morera de Montsant, under the DOQ Priorat appellation.
The family has two large estates, both at 700 metres above sea level. Most of the older vines are located on the estate they own in the village of Porrera, on llicorella terrain.
The Finca Mas Mustardó estate is where the winery is located and where enotourism can be carried out. Construction began in 2005 and the winery was built at the foot of the Sierra del Montsant, surrounded by a sea of vineyards.
The visit begins at the foot of the vineyard, where you learn about the varieties they cultivate such as garnatxa blanca, garnatxa negre, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
The visit continues in the modern three-storey winery. Here, you will discover the reception, production and fermentation areas located on the main floor, and then descend to the underground floor to see the bottling room and room where the wines are aged in barrels.
Finally, you can go up to the top floor, where you will find a perfectly fitted out tasting room with fantastic views of the southern part of the Serra del Montsant Natural Park.
The mountain range boasts great biological diversity and – as indicated by the name Montsant, meaning ‘Holy Mountain’ – it used to be a place of retreat for medieval hermits who were fleeing from worldly pleasures and found tranquility among its great cliffs and ravines.
In addition, winding through the Mas Mustardó estate is the ancient Carthusian path that linked the nearby monastery of Santa María de Scala Dei with the road to Prades and Lleida (Way of St. James).
In terms of wine tourism, the Joan Ametller winery offers various possibilities for discovering its wines and their surroundings. These range from the Essential visit, where you learn just the basics of the winemaking process and taste three wines of your choice, to the Premium visit for those who already have some experience in the world of wine and are interested in going into more detail.
Come and experience enotourism at Celler Joan Ametller and discover the story of a family that returned to its roots.
