If you are planning a getaway to the Priorat, visit the Hidalgo Albert winery in Poboleda. This family has been dedicated to the world of wine for more than 25 years and their current winery was set up in 2003. It is situated in the northern part of the so-called historical Priorat, also known as the Alt (high) Priorat, which is an area that coincides with the former domains of the Scala Dei Monastery and its priory. In fact, the winery is only 2 kilometres away from the old monastery.
The cellar is located among the vineyards of the Finca Les Salenques estate, in a protected area within the Montsant Nature Reserve. Wines with a distinctly Mediterranean character are produced from this and its neighboring estates. The winery building boasts traditional architecture and is made of local stone, integrating it perfectly into the landscape.
The numerous varieties of grape planted – garnatxa, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Merlot, cariñena, garnatxa blanca and Viognier – together with the altitude and a complex orography, mean that each variety has to be harvested at a different time, in accordance with their different rates of ripening.
The harvest and other processes are all carried out manually, following organic farming methods, and without the use of herbicides or pesticides. In 2012, the winery expanded its processing area and the bottle cellar. With these reforms, the work and winemaking conditions were greatly improved.
You can visit Hidalgo Albert any day of the week, with prior reservation. The visit begins in the vineyards and continues in the winery where you will see the winemaking and ageing rooms, and do a wine tasting. You will discover the place where some of the region’s best Cariñena wines are made.
Furthermore, on request, you can end your visit to the winery with a meal prepared on the estate by the family.
You can complement this wine tourism getaway with a visit to the historic Monastery of Scala Dei, making your trip a brief but fantastic tour of the Priorat.
