This winery offers the visitor a homely experience of wine tourism that combines tradition and modernity. Sangenís i Vaqué was founded in 1978 when Pere Sangenís and Conxita Vaqué began planting vines on the Monlleó family estates, which had belonged to Sangenís’ ancestors from before 1700. In 1979 they began to produce wine in a winery located in Porrera, a village within the DOQ Priorat region.

The family owns 13 hectares of terraces and slopes of llicorella slate, which is typical of the Priorat area. From this, it produces 30,000 bottles a year. The poor, south-facing land and the region’s dry climate, punctuated by a sea breeze that softens the summer heat, are the cause of both the vineyards’ low rate of production and the high quality of its grapes, as the plants can perform photosynthesis very effectively. Maintaining the soil with natural fertilizers also contributes to the quality of the vineyard, because these help to retain the scarce humidity better, especially in the summer months.

During the visit you will gain an in-depth knowledge of the entire vinification process, from fermentation to ageing, and discover concepts such as maceration.

You will be able to enjoy the fantastic barrel room where the wines rest in French and American oak barrels for several months before being bottled. You will also have time to learn about the history of winemaking in the Priorat region.

The visit will end in the tasting room, where you can leisurely sample five of the wines from the family winery: Clos Monlleó, Coranya, Vall Por, Dara and Sangenís i Vaqué. You will be accompanied, at all times, by a member of the Sangenís i Vaqué family.

The visit – including the wine tasting – costs 6 euros per person, and lasts about an hour and a half. Prior reservation is required.
