If you want a unique experience of wine tourism, travel to the Conca de Barberà region and visit Vega Aixalà, a small family winery located in Vilanova de Prades, among high-altitude vines growing on licorella terraces. These conditions – the slate and the altitude of 800 to 900 meters – provide Vega Aixalà wines with extraordinary, singular qualities.

The winery was founded in 2003 and is the realization of a dream that goes back to the grandfather of the family, who planted the first vineyards. The family decided to recover the legacy of their forefathers and today have 10 hectares of vineyards. The sustained growth of the winery has helped them reach a production rate of 35,000 bottles per year.

All the wines at Vega Aixalà are produced organically, and no herbicides, pesticides or insecticides are used in their vineyards. This way, they maintain high biodiversity levels in all their estates and preserve their natural resources.

The estates sit on the outskirts of Vilanova de Prades, among three encircling hill ranges: the Serra de la Llena, Serra de Prades and Serra del Montsant. This location creates a very special microclimate, as the hilly ranges block the thermal sea breezes that blow inwards from the coast. Along with the altitude and llicorella terrain, this continental climate and scarce rains give these wines their unique personality.

A typical visit begins in the vineyards, protagonists of the winery. It is well worth strolling among the vines as you listen to the explanations of Eva Aixalà, owner and hostess. To be able to see the whole estate during your day of enotourism, part of the tour will be done in a 4×4 all terrain vehicle. Along the route, you can take in fantastic panoramic views of the mountains and vineyards.

The wine tasting takes place in a very special spot, the place where Eva’s grandfather used to stop for breakfast before continuing his work in the field. There is a fountain here, which is the source of the name La Font dels Aubacs, given to one of their wines.

The visit costs 12 euros, lasts an hour and a half, and includes three wines. It ends in the winery located in the village, a small and well-used space where, among other things, you will discover the peculiarities of vinification in cement tanks.

In addition to the visit, there are other options and activities offered by the winery, such as eating in the vineyards under a wooden pergola, or what is called “truffle-tourism”. This is an option for those who visit during the black truffle season – from December to February – when Vega Aixalà gets together with Tòfona de la Conca to offer you wine tasting on one hand and a chance to discover the secrets of the black truffle on the other. You can participate in the search for truffles accompanied by specialist dogs. This is a fun outdoor activity, and highly recommended for families with children.

Come experience enotourism in Vega Aixalà and spend a wonderful day with your family surrounded by nature and in the company of good wine.
