Genium Celler winery
DO PrioratThis is the story of how five families joined forces to create quality wines made from their own vineyards. That was how this small winery came into existence on the ground floor of a house that was once the home of the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei, a winery that has been named one of the 100 best in the world by Wine & Spirits Magazine. ©Enoguia

Genium Celler was founded in 2002 in the municipality of Poboleda – in the DOQ Priorat region – by five families with one objective: to produce quality wines from their own vineyards.
One of the founding members owned a few apartments in a building that had formerly belonged to the Carthusian monks of Scala Dei. After restoring and converting the ground floor into a winery, the families began to produce and vinify grapes from their own harvests.
This small cellar is an example of the integration of new technologies into a rural environment. The winery has stainless steel tanks of different capacities and diameters for fermenting each variety separately, and refrigeration equipment for continuous temperature control.
The vineyards that are owned by Genium Celler have limited yields, but produce high quality fruit. They predominantly grow the autochthonous, classic varieties of the Priorat – garnatxa and cariñena – but also have some Merlot, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Pedro Ximénez and garnatxa blanca. Most of the vines are old vines that were planted at the beginning of the last century. The wines produced include: Genium Ximenis, a barrel fermented white wine; Genium Celler, a red ‘Crianza’ wine; Genium Ecològic, an organic red; and Genium Costers, a red ‘Reserva’ wine made from the oldest vines.
An important part of the winery’s output is certified as organic by the CCPAE (Catalan Council for Organic Production), which means that they can market their wines under the organic label. Genium Celler was chosen as one of the best wineries in the world by Wine & Spirits Magazine, which included it in the list of the “Top 100 Wineries” in 2017.
As far as wine tourism goes, a typical tour begins by visiting the small winery in the village of Poboleda. The first thing you will see is the many stainless steel vats where the wines are fermented, some of which are very small and used for microvinification.
You will also see the room where the ageing takes place in 225-litre French oak barrels from the Allier region in France. You may well wonder how it is possible to lower the barrels into this small room. The answer is: with tenacity and patience.
The visit ends on one of the family estates where everything necessary for the tasting will be laid out. Here you will discover the wines in the midst of the Priorat landscape.
Come and experience enotourism in one of the best rated wineries in the DOQ Priorat and taste unique wines of the highest quality: the fruit of years passion and labor by the families who joined together to turn their dream into reality.

Great wines from Priorat!
