This Priorat winery was founded in 1984, in the heart of the region, in the village of Torroja del Priorat. It is run by the Rotllan Torra family and has the resources to produce up to 150,000 bottles a year. They currently sell around 120,000 bottles and do not plan to continue growing in volume. Instead, they are committed to working on quality and are even contemplating reducing their output.
Their first wine appeared in 1984, and was made in a building called La Balandra, which still houses the winery today. The building dates from the 16th century, and was constructed by the Carthusian monks who first arrived from France in the 12th century to repopulate the lands in the area that had been newly reconquered from ‘infidel Saracens‘. These monks were the ones who introduced vineyard cultivation in the region, along with new and advanced winemaking techniques.
The building, where the Rotllan Torra winery is now located, had already been designed for winemaking by the monks. The main floor is divided into three naves with impressive semicircular arches. The central nave is larger than the lateral ones, which makes the interior more spacious. The grape reception point is located on this floor, as is the equipment required for the initial stages of vinification.
The ageing rooms are located underground which, together with their thick stone walls, provide the ideal temperature and humidity for wines to mature in.
The company offices, visitors’ reception, and the tasting room are located on the top floor, where you will discover wines with a marked personality and packed with history. The tasting allows you to enjoy the wines slowly, in a laid-back and relaxed way. During the tour, a member of the Rotllan Torra family will guide you through this piece of the Priorat’s living history.
The winery owns 25 hectares of land, with some vineyards over 70 years old. They buy the rest of the grapes from different farmers in the area. The winery currently exports to more than 70 countries around the world.
A tour of this old Priorat winery is a pleasant stroll through history and tradition, where you discover wines born of hard work and tenacity. Rotllan Torra offers quality wine tourism in a winery where you will uncover a past that that illuminates the present.
