La Morera de Montsant Font de la Pregona Cartoixa d’Escaladei Celler La Conreria d’Scala Dei

In this edition of Vinos y Caminos (wines and routes) we will walk in the shadow of the imposing Sierra del Montsant and discover the origin of the Priorat and its wines. We will hike from La Morera de Montsant to the small village of Escaladei passing through its Carthusian monastery. We will end our trip by visiting the La Conreria de Scala Dei winery, and we will eat in that very same town, specifically at the El Rebost de Scala Dei restaurant.

00:00 h. We set out on our route from the lower part of the town of La Morera de Montsant (743 m) and follow the markings for GR-171, the route starts out on a pathway, but after just a few metres it turns into a trail. At all times we have fantastic views of the Sierra del Montsant. We walk towards the west.

00:35 h. We leave the Carthusian path and take another trial, this one is heading south, it passes through a pretty forest. We make a continuous but gentle decent, eventually joining another track. If we were to remain on this pathway, we would quickly get to the La Cartuja de Scaladei (Carthusian monastery), however, we decide to follow a trail that makes a steep ascent in a northerly direction. After the sharp climb, the trail flattens out until it reaches a crossing with other tracks.

01:50 h. We opt to go straight on, we can see some really impressive vineyards on our right. We soon arrive at the fuente de la Pregona (fountain), where we can fill our canteens (2 hours).

02:00 h. We go back to walking among the vineyards, leaving behind the spectacular views of the Racó de Misa, when we take a turn-off to the left heading towards the lime kiln that the Carthusian monks used for the construction of the monastery.

02:15 h. In this area we are repeatedly switching between a pathway and a trail, as we make our way to the Ermita de La Pietat to take a look at the variety of trees that have been planted there.

02:30 h We again take a path that descends down the valley in the direction of La Cartuja, which takes us just a few minutes to reach. You can visit what was the first Carthusian monastery founded in Spain by this order, which hails from the French region of Provence. Ticket: € 3.5.

We stay on the main route, which is now asphalted, bound for the tiny town of Escaladei, where we will stop by the La Conreria d’Scala Dei Winery to tour its facilities and taste its wines from the well-known Priorat denomination of origin.

Note: The times are always approximate. Undertaking the route by yourself or doing so as part of a large group, can significantly change the sector times and the final total.

Discover wineries by walking through some wonderful landscapes.
