Celler Can Marlès winery

DO Penedès
Landscapes, alpacas and organic wine

Can Marlès is a fully organic enotourism complex comprising 300 hectares of vineyards, mountains and forests. It is the only winery to boast these characteristics in the entire El Montmell zone (Baix Penedès region). It produces four single-varietal wines and one sparkling Clàssic Penedès, using the Tempranillo, Shiraz, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc grape varieties.

Can Marlès has launched a significant restoration and protection project for ‘the Catalan Farmhouse’ in order to ensure its history is safeguarded. For this reason, it has converted these buildings into top rural enotourism farmhouses. You can sleep amidst vineyards and forests, go for a walk among the vines, learn about their exclusive herd of alpacas, visit the winery and enjoy a tasting session involving its spectacular wines.

Among other activities, Can Marlès offers you regional cuisine prepared in the winery’s tasting room, all-terrain Segway tours, horse riding routes and a wine tasting session 540 metres above sea level, at the foot of the historic Montmell Castle (14th century). You can also enjoy a picnic under an oak tree, surrounded by alpacas, or go on a hot air balloon ride. These activities are available to individuals, businesses and groups.

This winery not only offers wine tourism, but also a hiking route through the little-known Serra de Montmell, up to the ruins of the Castle of Montmell.

Can Marlès is a relatively new project, started in 2005. The winery is located in the Montmell valley and offers a wide range of wine tourism activities, in addition to accommodation.

Can Marlès presently owns two fully restored farmhouses fitted out for wine tourism. One of them is used for tastings, lunches, business dinners, small concerts, etc… The other farmhouse provides accommodation for up to six people, and includes all amenities, a fully equipped kitchen, and a swimming pool. Their aim is to eventually restore the other old farmhouses in the valley – some dating back to the year 1500 – always respecting and preserving the traditional architecture of the region.

Your visit begins with a walk through the vineyards where certified organic vines flourish without the use of herbicides or pesticides. This is where the cellar’s Chardonnays and Sauvignon Blancs are born, as well as where the Negre Ull de Llebre (Tempranillo) grows, all under the umbrella of the DO Penedès appellation.

The visit continues in the winery where you can see the vinification and ageing rooms. Before tasting the wines, you will meet a few unique characters, waiting to be fed: these are the alpacas, friendly and peaceful animals that are sure brighten up your visit, especially if you come with children.

After the alpacas’ breakfast, it is time for ours. Inside the farmhouse, you will find a specially prepared table laid with homemade cheeses, local sausages, black pudding, white beans, freshly baked bread…a real gastronomic feast. While you enjoy your breakfast of local produce, the hostess, Lucía, will serve three of the cellar’s wines, explaining the characteristics of each as you taste them.

After this, you can do a short hike to the Montmell Castle and nearby church. The route starts at the winery. You first reach a picnic area next to the new church of Sant Miquel, where you take the steep path going up to the the old 12th century church. From there you continue upwards (there are stretches where you might need to use your hands!) until you reach the ruins of the castle, from where there are spectacular views of the Camp de Tarragona. The route (there and back) takes about two hours, and ends at the picnic area. In total you will climb and descend about 370 meters.

Come to Can Marlès, in the heart of DO Penedès, for a wonderful experience of enotourism surrounded by nature and animals. Don’t miss the opportunity!

  1. Visita increible. Volveremos!!!
